[2]Tokyo April 9th 1908.
Weather: Last night
about 8:30 the rain that had been pouring down nearly all day changed to sleet
and snow, so this morning when we awoke there was about 6 or 7 inches of snow
covering every thing. The snow was very wet and heavy so bent the trees and in
one or two cases broke them right off.
Elder Seely had made all necessary
arrangement to returne to Hokkaido as President Taylor desired him to be in his
field by Sunday April 12th. After breakfast he, Elder Caine and
Brother and Sister Thomas started out for Ueno station. They tried to get a
rikisha each but could not; so they determined to walk to the car line and
there take the car to Ueno, after wadeing around in the slush and storm until
after 1 o’clock pm, they reached the station but found that due to the heavy
snow, no trains were going north so Elder Seely returned here with the others
who had gone to see him off, all wetter but just as happy as before.[3]
Due to the starm I did not venture out of the house.
The morning was spent talking with
the brethern and reading for Elder Fairbourn a portion of “Macus King the
Mormon” After dinner Mr.Tane and Mr Tsukamoto called. The later had a date with
Elder Caine but as he was not at home I entertained them both until 4 o’clock
at which time Caine returned. I then had a gospel conversation with Mr. Tane
which lasted about thirty minutes.
The evening was spent here at home
visiting with the visiting brethern and having a good time in general, I also
helped Ei San with her Bible lesson
This evening when I went to bed my
lungs bothered me a little.
Retired 10:20.

Weather: Cloudy.
This morning after breakfast I led
some reading and then went to Yotsuya to get some things for Sister Nachie.
After dinner, I went to the Dentists with Elder Seely and Fairbourn. We took
the car a Aoyama, but due to the crowd that were out to see the funeral of
Arisugaw’s twenty-one year old son, Miya. we could only get part way down in
the car so had to walk about two miles. I called at the dentists but he was too
busy to mend my tooth but I made a date for two o’clock tomorrow. I then went
on to Shinkawa’s and paid for Elder Chadwick’s cloths and at the same time sold
a Brief History. I returned home at 3:20. There were some Sunday school
children here, so I talked with them a while.
Today being Elder Fairbourns
birthday and tomorrow and Sister Thomis’es it was thought best by Brother and
Sister Thomas to have an extra supper so a very fine spread was put out for up
just previous[5] to the departure of Elders Chadwick Anderson and
Seely for Elder Seely decided to stay over and go up with the Morioka Elders
and stay with them over Sunday as it would be impossible to reach Sapporo in
time to attend meeting on Sunday
The supper was delicious and
thoroughly enjoyed by all.
At 6:15 President Taylor, Ele.
Taylor and Brother and Sister Thomas left the house with the three elders that
were going north. I remained home and studied my Sunday School lesson. Elders
Stimpson and Taylor stayed here with us tonight. Elder Caine held a Bible class
and Mr. Okada stayed so late that we had prayers upstairs and at 10:45 I
retired. Mr. Okada went home about 11:30.

never saw nature more beautiful. The cherries are loaded with blossoms and
various other trees are blooming which make the entire place look like a big
flower-garden. After supper I wraped the silk to send out. At 8 o’clock Mr Tane
called and I helped him to understand his Bible lesson.

was spent studying and reading “A life of Christ for the Young” by Weed as
President Taylor requested we to read it over before taking or considering it
use for the English Bible Class.
After dinner President Taylor
thought it advisable for me to go over to the Imperial University and have the
Head of the Medical department examine my lung as they continue in their weak
condition. I went over and met Dr. Aoyama, and he gave me a thorough
examination saying that I had a slight catarrh in the throat and lungs and
subscribed some medican also said that a change of air would be good for me. I

[26]Tokyo, Thursday April 30th 1908
Weather, Beautiful.
This morning I got up at 6:45 and
after dressing went downstairs and assisted in doing away with a rat. The
experience was realy interesting, and from the noise was just as exciting. When
President Taylor went into the office this morning he discovered that a rat had
been doing mischief during the night by chewing books papers and rubbers found
about the office so we started a search for it as we knew that there was no way
for it to get out other than the floor and that had been closed during the
night. After a short hunt was discovered in one of the drawers in the writing
desk. President procured a large stick, and stationed himself directly in front
of the drawer while I got behind to scare it out. During the mean time Elder
Thomas who had been assisting up until the first sight of the rat had taken up
his quarter on the out side of the window and had become a[27]
spectator and had also attracted his wife and Elder Caine who exhibited equally
as much courage as the rest of us.
The rat made a few side skips for a
quick get away and then lunged forward directly in line for President Taylor
but instead of exicuting the stick as intending he jumped in the air, striking
his hand on a nail in the big stick inflicting a slight wound while the rat
passed by with out being molested and took refuge behind the big stack of
Church Histories and other books stored away in the corner.
There was nothing left now but to
move all of those books in order to get at its hiding place. After moving about
half of them it jumped up in my face which almost upset my nervers, and then
hid in another pile of books. After a little while we located it and President
Taylor with all the dignity of a conquer raised the war stick and let it fall
on the poor thing while the eager spectators cheered the chivalrous youth[28]
and thus ended the life of one of the Mikado’s pets.
After breakfast I helped dust the
book that we pulled down and then to clean the office. About 11:00 I went to
Yochomachi and ate dinner there. The after noon was spent tracting and talking

My health is improving and I am
feeling quite well today. I got up at 6:30 and spent fore noon at home reading.
At 12 noon we had prayer meeting.
President Taylor did not meet with us as he desired to appoint Elders Hubbard
and Harris to begin active missionary work and so went over to Yochomachi for
meeting.
After meeting Elder Caine and Thomas
and I went over to Kudan where a great celebration is being held in honor of
the soldiers who have departed from this world.
Elder Caine received from a friend
several tickets to the “ Sumotari” exhibition, so that was what attracted us
for we had heard a great deal about this kind of athletic sport but had never
seen an exhibition.
The Japanese wrestler is unlike the
ordinary Japanese as he is very large, fat and muscler, has low sensual face
and long hair, done up[35] in a cone shape on the crown of the head.
He is very strong and does many feats with his strength.
The match takes place in in a sand
ring about fifteen feet in diameter, encircled by straw, rice-bales and
protected from the sun by an umbrella-like roof supported on four posts. We
watched about twenty events. The wrestlers are naked but for a colored apron
about their loins and to see the muscles and fat that some of them cary is
surprising.
An umpire with a fan in his had
stood in the ring to deal out fair play, and whenever a foul was made both
contestants must step out of the ring and pick up a little sand or lime by the
two left had posts, and then reenter and take their places. The object of the
game was to put each other out of the ring or else throw down.)
The sepectators were accommodated in
a place resembling a temporary theatre surround the arena. There[36] were
thousands of people, mostly soldiers in so much that the yard was filled right
up and it was with great difficulty that we got in and then only because we
were foreigners. The people seemed enthusiastic over the sport and to enjoy it
very much, but I could see nothing of much interest but am glad that I have
seen one.
Kundan is the military park and has
within it wall the trophies of all the wars. I have visited this place before
and seen all that is worth seeing.
We returned home about 4 p.m. and I
read until suppertime.
This evening four young men called

I got up about 6:30 and read until
breakfast was ready. I ate breakfast and just as I was about to leave to go to
Yotsuya a friend of Elder Caines’ called and I joined to talk with him so he
could speak english very well and had been in Mexico several years and knew all
about the country. We had a very interesting talk.
Went to Yochomachi about 10:30 and
went out and showed Elder Harris where I had tracted, so that he and Elder
Hubbard would know where to start for they are entending to work from Monday.
After dinner I went out tracting and about 2:30 met an old man who did not
believe in a here [written over hear] after, and the argument we had for two
hours was interesting and I was assisted a great deal by the spirit.
I returned home at 5 o’clock. After

[39]Tokyo Saturday May 9,1908
Weather: Cloudy and
cool.
I got up about 6:30 and helped clean
house. The Dr. told me to come this morning at 8:30 and he would operate on my
nose, therefore I did not eat any breakfast as I though I might have to take
chloroform. After breakfast Elder Caine went with me over to his office. This
morning I made it a special desire in my prayers that if it was absolutely
necessary to have the operation prefromed that the Lord would allow it to be
done and if it was not that the Dr. would not do it.
We arrived at his office about 8:30
and sit there for about 40 minutes when I was called in. After examining my
nose again he said that the operation was unseccessary, and that I was alright.
I regarded this as an answer to my prayers so returned home rejoicing.
After eating a few bites I set to
work helping President Taylor with the cleaning and also I mended my cloths and
hat[40] As today is the appointed day for the Sunday School boys to
be entertained here Elder Stoker came over about noon and we set to work
preparing the things with which to entertain.
At 2 p.m. all was in
readiness and twenty boy ranging in ages from 5 to 16 years had arrived.
Elder Stoker, Sister Tai and I had
the entertainment in charge. Elder Stoker being spoaksman.
The children all met in the big room
and sang a song after which prayer was offered. I went to Aoyama while this was
going on and bought some ribbon and peanuts for the children.
We went out in the Japanese part
after this and played “three-deep” for a while. Then “pussy wants a corner.”
The third number was a contest in fetching rings in a squar from a line some 12
feet away. The game was as follows, a figure [appears as a much smaller box]

the boy divided in to two companies and the side that could get to nine first
consegatively was the winners. The boys[41] enjoyed it very much.
The obsticle races were next in
order and were entered into with vim
We then went out on the grassy plot
to the north and had several races and a tug of war, after which we played
steal-sticks for a while. We then came back to the house, the children washed
themselves and met in the large-room where several games such as guessing
games.
At 7 o’clock they all gathered
around the table in the dining room and enjoyed a nice lunch. When the got up
from they all had a look of contentment such as only children who have been
entirely satisfied can have. After supper they again assembled in the big room
and were dismissed by prayer, and then went to thier houses. The weather was
ideal and the entertainment a success in every way.
We did not get supper until 8:20. I
swept the room for morning and dusted. About 9:30 took a bath and at 10:20
retired.

with a friendly spirit and give a true description of thing as they are.
About 9:30 I went over to Yochomachi

out doors and played the game with the rings that the boys played, jump the

[50]Tokyo, Monday May 18, 1908
Weather- Clear and
hot.
The weather is beautiful today but
just a little too warm for convenience.
I got up at 6:20 and swept the house
After breakfast I went to Yochomachi and tracted all fore noon, and had fair
success.
I ate dinner over there with the
elders and while eating Elder Stoker told me about Mr. Kuga’s visit last night.
Some five or six months ago while out tracting Elder Stoker called at his home
and had a talk with him and he begin to investigate thinking that Mormonism was
Heathenisms and he being a Baptist desired to show elder Stoker his mistake.
After investigating for some time he ask to be admited in to the church, but he
was advised to continue his investigations a little further.
About that time I visited the head
m[e]w/[man] of the Jail over in Yochomachi and my visit brought a great deal of
opposition from a Christian missionary named Taylor who is[51] doing
work amoung the officers of the Jail and as Mr. Kuga works there he was severly
critised by the head of the department where he work as well as the Missionary.
This critism casued him to disconinue his investigation but he still continued
to come around and was very friendly.
For the past few week he has been
fighting a battle with himself and when he came last might it was with a letter
to the Head of the Baptist Church with his resignation and a statement that he
woul write later his reasons.
This is very good news for his a man
of some ability and faith and if he continues faithful will be a power for good
amoung his fellow men.
After dinner I layed down for a hour
and just as I was going out a young man called and I spent the after-[next
line] noon talking gospel to him.
I returned home at 5 o’clock and
studied my Bible lesson.
We had a good class and many points
were brought out. I received a card[52] from Mr. Iheda this morning.
The Asahi Shimbun continued the
article on Salt Lake and Ogden in today’s paper and nodout much good will
result from the article for it is full of praise for the Mormons.

I got up at 6:45 and studied for a
while about 9a.m. I went to Yochomachi and tracted during the forenoon. At 12
noon I went to the house and met with the elders for prayer meeting.
I tracted until 4 p.m. and then met
with Elders Caine and Stoker at Yochomachi and a program and ma[nu]e was
prepared for the party to be given tomorrow evening at Head-[next line]
quarters for the Theoligical Department of the Sunday School. The Japanese
Bible Class and the English Bible class.
The program is to consist of various

I tracted a while before dinner and
then came back here.
The after noon was spent preparing
for the entertainment to be held this evening for the Theological Dept. of
Sunday School and the Bible classes. A dainty lunch was prepared and by 5:30
every thing was in readiness.
About 6 p.m. they starte to come in
and a 7 sharp the elders and nine Japanese making a total of 17 sit down to a
fine supper consisting of meat and butter sand-[next line] wiches, shrimp
solid, four kinds of cake, straw-berries, candy and nuts.
Just one hour was consumed in eating
supper and all seemed to[55] to relish it very much.
After supper games of various kinds
were played until eleven oclock when a song was sung and the party closed by
prayer.
The party was a grand success and
will no doubt be the means of teaching a powerful lesson as the Japanese
entertainment are generally accompanied by sake and singing girls, but the
party to night showed that this thing were unnecessary for it was a common
opinion that a better time was never had.
The games played were as followes.

After breakfast I started on an
errand to get a man to take some freight to the station and on the way met Mr.
Ikeda from Sendai . He was coming over to see me. I returned with him and spent
the rest of the forenoon talking with him. He has come down so he says to see
if he can get released from a contract which he signed some years ago which
binds him to become a preacher of the Nihon Christian church. After dinner I
went with him to Yochomachi and had a talk with him there. His is living while
in Tokyo with his fostered mother. I spent some time talking with the Elders
and then called at Mr. Osaka’s and made a date with him for Tuesday evening.

This afternoon Mr. Ikeda called and
spent most of the after noon but his manner was somewhat changed and he said
when his fortired mother learned of his associations with the Mormons she was
very angry and forbid him from going to their homes anymore. She is a
Christian: but is misled as many others.
The evening was spent studing and
reading. About 9:45 took a bath and at 10:20 retired.
Today the Patrotic Womens
Association held a big meeting on the [Resu]pa ba at which they were honored by
the presence of the [Euipesas]. but the wind was so bad the the meeting was

[58]Tokyo, Sunday May 24, 1908
Weather: Cloudy with

This morning I got up at 6:45 Sunday
School convened at 9 a.m. with 57 in attendence.
After presenting the minutes Elder
Stoker, Harris, Hubbard and I went to Aoyoma and saw the graves of the victoms
of the Matsu shin disaster The grave of Marshal Aoyama’s son was most decorated.
The Matsushin was training vessel on
board of which was about 100 young men from the ranks of the nobles who were
training to become officers in the Navy. About two weeks ago while down in
Taiwan bay it was accadently sunk and about 200 persons lost their lives;
amoung them being the older son of Marshal Aoyama. We returned home at noon and
ate dinner.
About 1:30 President Taylor handed
me a letter and told me to take it to Elder Stoker. This letter proved to be a
release for Elder Stoker. I watched him close as he read it and saw the tears
come up to his eyes. I can almost imagine his feeling after an absence from
home of almost six years.
We had a fine Sacrament meeting five
of the saints were present with us and partook of the Sacarment.
After meeting we, Elder Stoker,
Harris, Hubbard, Sister Thomas and I went with Sisters Tai, Kawaki and Ei San
over to the Barrocks south of the house where a celebration was being held. The
thing was very uninteresting to me.
I spent about a hour before supper
studing as I have to discuss the subject of “A Successful Life” this evening.
Our meeting commenced at 7:30 with eight present. I spoke twenty-five minutes
and feel well pleased with the effort for it was the best that I have ever

just before leaving his home the preacher Suzuki (from) the Baptist church
visited him and tried to pusuade him to change his mind say that from any
standpoint he was making a great mistake. Mr Kuga asked him if he had ever
studied any thing about Mormonism or if he had read the articles of faith and
the letters he had written explaining his reasons for leaving the Baptist

advised to do so, and to read[65] History placing a mark on any part
that was bad and then he would talk with him. The preacher left.
We traveled to the river with out
incident. Mr Sato was met at the end of Aoyama and went with us to see the
ordinance performed.
We walked up the rive to the place
where the former baptisms were performed and all assembled on the bank. After
singing and prayer President Taylor spoke for a short time, explaining the

way into the water, and Mr Kuga was immersed. After changing the wet clothes we
re essembled and sang a song and dismissed by prayer.

and it would be hard to express the joy I felt in acting in this calling.
After meeting I read for a while and
then went with Elder Stoker to Yochomachi and helped him with meeting there.
[67]At the conclusion of
Elder Stoker’s remarks I bore testimony for about 10 minutes
Meeting will here after be

arriving at Yochokawa some thing like an hour later. We there took Rikisha’s to
the Bluff after which we walked up to the place where Apostle Heber J Grant in
company with Elders Kelch, Ensign and Taylor dedicated this land to the
promorgation of the Gospel. We found that the big tree that had marked the
place had been cut down but as there were many small trees we bound shade and
all sit down and spent a hour singing song and talking about the place. Before
leaving the place President Taylor offered a fine prayer in which he thanked
the Lord for the success that had attended the work thus far and prayed that
the blessing that had been asked for at the time of the dedication[71]
would be given unto all of those who labored here. The prayer was full of
beauty and was accompanied by the Holy Spirit.
We ate a light lunch and then walked
down to the Bund. At 2 pm. We took launch and went out to the Mongolia which
was anchered out in the harbor first in side the break waters. We all went on
the Ship and looked around until 2:45 when we said goodbye and pushed down the
gang way.
The Mongolian is a very large boat
and was just crowded with passangers. I saw more foreigners than at any other
time since I came to Japan. We sit in the Launch and talked to Elder Stoker
until we pulled to far from the boat and there we waived for a while. When we
landed at the pier we walked down to the end of the wharf and stood there until
the boat saild away out of site. We then went to the station and took the 4:30

For the past two day a man has been

“sake” was haded by him to the bridegroom and there to the bride this was

contract is held by the middle man, and he has the power to hold them to the
contract as long as he see fit, and a divorce can only be obtained by mutual

After the “sake” was consumed a lot
of bowing and scraping was indulged in and then all forme a circle , (sitting
of course on the floor). And a bountious feast was spread. During the meal, the
attention was consentrated on the bride and groom and speeches of various kinds

comforting words from the old men and women who seemed to have had a great deal

I got up about 6 and took my bath as

two hours.
After he returned home, I went out
tracting and worked an hour. I had a very strange experience today. I was
engaged in conversation with a man & his wife and was talking with as much
ease as if I was speaking in english, when a tickling came in my throat which
started me to cough, and inspite of every effort[136] I could not
stop, so had to excuse myself and go on. I coughed until I got home. I have had
one similar experience since I came to Japan and on in America.
I was very much imbarrassed.
After dinner I gave Elder Hubbard a

This evening Elder Hubbard and I

Elder Daniel P. Woodland,

Ushigome Ku City
Dear Brother: -
Having for some time been very
anxious about your physical condition and feeling that another winter in Japan[147]
would bring up on you bodily distresses such as you experienced last winter, I
so here by release you in honor to returne home.
Your labor has been performed in
earnestness and wisdom and [the following phrase inserted above] (through the
word Mission) and has been perfectly acceptable to the President of the Mission
I feel assured that it has been approved by God, This being the case, the seeds
you have sown in weakness will not be over looked by the Father and your
testimony, borne in honesty will stand for or against those who have heard it.
Dear Brother, we regret this
parting, for our association with you has tought us to love you and we will
miss your happy inspiring face [face inserted above] and the support your
faith-laden words have always given us. May the Lord protect you in your journey
home and be with you always. May your physical weakness entirely recover and
your presence be a comfort and blessing to your mother.
[148]Keep on the armor of
righteousness and stand firm for the Kingdom of God.
Your brother,
The
letter was written and signed by Alma O. Taylor.
President
Japan Mission
The news was a shock for I had not
heard a word from any one, and although I knew some change would soon be made
as Elder Chadwick was soon to be released, and also for the past week I had
felt a little strange about the matter, I was entirely unprepared for the shock
but I realize that it is for the best, and in leaving Japan I feel to thank God
for all the blessings that have come to me and I know pray that the Mission
will continue to grow and eventually the name of God be honored as it should be
in all the land.
President Taylor informs me that
Elder Chadwick has also been released and will be my companion[149]
home starting from here Sept. 16, 1908
This evening eight was present at

Elder Chadwick at Nikko and to see that famious place.
After meeting President Taylor said
to tell the owner of the house that after the 17th instant we would
vacate. Elder Hubbard is to go to Morioka and elder Harris to Head-Quarters and
this house is to be closed

I got up at 4:40 and after dressing
fixed every thing to go to Nikko and then packed my books. I ate breakfast and
then dressed up and at 8:40 started for Uneno station. Arrived there at 10
o’clock and purchased a[155] ticket which cost me [sign for yen]
3.20 and at 10:15 left the station for Nikko.
The car was large
and comfortable as only a few people were in it. The distance covers just five
hours so I used the time reading and talking as there were some Japanese who
seemed interested in me.
The ride to say the least, was
delightful for the train passed through beautiful fields of ripening rice and
grain and for in the distance could beseen the heavy wooden mountains The air
was just cool enough to be pleasant
One or two stations out from Ueno
five Indians and an Indian lady got on the same car with me and for the first
time in my life I saw the native guarb of an Indian woman.
At 3:15 p.m. I arrived at Nikko
Station, however before telling of the station I must first say a word about
the beautiful canyon between Utsugome and Nikko. Utsgome is a junction of the
Nikko branch and is situated about thirty miles from[156] Nikko
city. The train passes along a plain for about twent minutes after leaving this
city, and then began to ascend the mountains to Nikko.
The canyon through which it passes
is exqusit, either side is walled in by step hills or mountains covered from
top to bottom with beautiful pine trees and brush. Some places the mountains
are rugged and from the stories told me by an old man on the train they are
rich in legends which make them very dear to the Japanese. It requires a great
deal of effort for the train to make this ascent and requires about one hour.
The beautiful cryptomeria avenue extending form Imaichi to Nikko is very
beautiful. When the temples were build at Nikko the Daimyos quite impoverished
them selves by their lavish offerings. Each proudly vied with his neighbor and
laughed at economy. It happened that one lord was very poor at the time, so he
planted a row of[157]
cryptomerias on each
side of the road for a distance of twelve miles. He was laughed at, at the
time, but now those beautiful trees dify all the other works put together.
I had previously arranged to meet
Elder Chadwick at Nikko so when I got there was a little surprised not to find
him however I left my name with the hotel runner and took a rikisha to the
Konishi hotel I arrived there at 5 oclock and after making arrangement to stay
washed, and went back to the station to meet the 6 o’clock train but was
dissipointed again I was informed that another train would arrive at 7:30 so I
went back to my hotel and took my supper and waited there for my companion but
to my dissipointment he did not come so I went to bed however, I first doctered
my leg[158] which was very painful.
My room was an eight mat room with
nothing but a small looking glass and a mat in it.
The servant brought my meal to my
room on a tray and set there while I ate serving out rice She was pleasant so I
talked with her. Before retireing I took a hot bath. I slept with one eye open
all night for I thought maybe Bro. Chadwick would come up on the night train
but was again dissipointed. I got up at 4 o’clock and having decided that elder
C. had hanged his mind about coming, I set out to see the sights.
I walked down by the Sacred Red
Bridge and then about two miles up the river.
The morning air was bracing and in
all my life I never remember enjoying a walk more. The rive, a small stream
about the size of Boxelder Creek[159] was as clear as crystal and
rushed along as if it was realy in earnest.
The sun came up clear and warm over
the mountains flooding the dells with it golden rays. The oxen trudged along
with their heavy loads which were being taken to the copper mines a few miles
above interested me.
I drank in these sight with the
eager-ness of one who is famishing for I was indeed hungery for mountains and
streams, having not seen any thing of the kind for over a year.
The sunshine was soon to be
dispensed with for up the canyon came a heave fog, which soon changed the dells
to a dark gray.
I arrived at my hotel at 7:20 and
took breakfast, and then prepared to go to the temples The hotel boy took me to
the temple and I purchased a ticket for ¥80 which entitled my to see the three
temples[160] I hired a guide at the 2nd temple and went
trough it in a most thorough way. After seeing it all I came out and set down
to rest, and while sitting there who should come along but Bro. Chadwick. He
had spent the afternoon at Utsunomiya watching for me to come along, but I
having a mustach was quite unrecognizable and he had waited until the evening
train and not seen me when he got off at Nikko had gone to a hotel with out
inquireing about me.
I sit in the tea house and waited
until he got through the temples and then we walked over to the 3rd
temple and look around. We then went back to our hotels and did a little
shoping. We also arranged to start at 1:30 from Nikko and go by rikisha to
Imaichi , as that would give us a good chance to see the trees and other Note –
A full account of Nikko Temples may be found in The Guide to Nikko[161]
naturel scenery. I had a good dinner at my hotel and then packed my grip and
started. The hotel bill was ¥300 . The ride through the canyon was
delightful. We arrive at Imaichi in time to get the 2:50 train and had a car to
ourselves almost the entire distance home. As we had not seen each other for a
long time we enjoyed ourselves visiting and talking over bygones and our future
plans.
When we got down in the valley every
thing was clear and delightful. As we passed the wide fields out by Nieya we
begin to be enmantled about with night fall but only for a few minutes as the
moon at it best came slowly up from behind the low mountains and flooded every
thing painting a picture that befits the hush.
We arrived at Ueno at 7:30 and at 9
oclock were at Yochomachi

After Sunday School commenced[163]
I went in the kitchen and build up the fire and dried my garments.
I was asked to dinner after which I

best but I could.
Between Sunday School and meeting Mr
Tane and Ikada stayed and talked. I was called on to address the saints and
although I could not say what I desired to, I got on pretty fair. The saints
that have been so faithful have become very dear to me and it is with a degree
of sadness that I say goodbye. President Taylor made a few remarks after Elder
Chadwick and I spoke in which he spoke very highly of the labor that I had done
while here, which to me was a great comfort for I realize that my home going is
premature.
We all ate dinner together and then
I came here as I had an appointment with a young man
Elder Caine came over with me My

At 10 a.m. I left for the station, having first ordered my things to be taken
to the station On the way down I bought a[167] few articles. At
11:10 I arrived at the station and found Sister Tai and Katsu San awaiting me.
Soon after arriving the folks from Kasumigoka came and also several of my
friends came in to say goodbye. When the train was just about ready to start we
found that the man who was to bring my baggage had not arrived so as I had some
shoping to do President Taylor stayed be hind to bring it on the next train
while the rest of the crowd accompanied Elder Chadwick and me toYokohama. We
arrived at the station at 12 oclock and I went to the silk store with Elder
Caine and got some things to take home. President Taylor by some extra turn was
successful in getting by a morgin as the Karamaya seened to have forgotten all
about the train time. At 1:20 we all assembled on board the Iyo maru and had a
visit for about an hour[168] in the mean time several pictures were
taken of the little group.
Mr. Nasa , a friend of mine got on
the train at Shihabashi and only intended to go one station but as so the train
was a through one it did not stop, however he was allowed to returne free of
charge.
At 2:30 the boat commenced to push
away from shore and as long as we could see or distinguish any of the folks we
waved a fond good bye.
About 1/2 mile out of break water
the boat stoped and was searched for stole aways, during which time a silently
sought a secluded palce and sit thinking over the past three years and the
people I was leaving behind, and there as after since I left home my heart went
out to this nation in prayer fore I know that it will only be through the mercy
of our Heavenly Father that they will ver be able to appreciate the gospel and
take[169] advantage of the blessing it affords.
The bay was covered
with mist so that it obscured the beautiful scenery that is strown all along

Weather- Sea high
with cold wind,
I got up at 7:20 and took a bath but
sorry to say I was forced back to bed immediately as my head seemed too heavy
for my body.
The most of the day was spent in my
room occasionally exercising my self over a can which from[170] the
smell had been used by some tobacco fiend previous to my acceptence, and which
only added to the flame that in spite of all efforts would occasionally break
out. The day was most miserable but very thankful to say I was able to sleep
part of the time. The ship Dr called toward the evening and gave me a little
medicane which releaved me a little. During the night I rested pretty well.

not so high I got up at 6 oclock and walked until breakfast time. In spite of a
head ache and no appetite I determined to keep on deck, so I went down and ate
a little breakfast.
The forenoon was spent reading the
Last of the Mohicans and other books, also taking a glance at the passangers.
The three women who macrade[171]
as Misses are not of a type to be proud of. The one who dresses up and tries to
look pretty is of a very questionable character if I mistake not and the other
two although much more quier are not the noblest if tobacco taken with rough
men counts any thing.
The very large woman is a missionary
from Japan and seems to have an interest in the good of the people general.
The after noon was spent reading and
playing a few ship games.
At our table is a old english
genteleman and a young man from Australia is also a Salvation Army man but the
army man is unwell so has not been at the table since the first evening. The
old man is typical english and from what he says is not very friendly to
America and her ways. I have not ruffeled him up in any way

When he found that we were Mormon we

the other passengers found us to be Missionaries they of course laughed and
passed all kinds of remarks[175] in the smoking room, so Bro
Chadwick who was in there said, however he told them a few things that opened
their eyes.
At supper table the Old English man
had some questions, which I did my best to answer.
When the Mate was informed that he
had been associated with a Mormon he almost fell over board. I suppose I will
have it hot and heavy from now on
