[2]Tokyo April 9th 1908.
Weather: Last night
about 8:30 the rain that had been pouring down nearly all day changed to sleet
and snow, so this morning when we awoke there was about 6 or 7 inches of snow
covering every thing. The snow was very wet and heavy so bent the trees and in
one or two cases broke them right off.
Elder Seely had made all necessary
arrangement to returne to Hokkaido as President Taylor desired him to be in his
field by Sunday April 12th. After breakfast he, Elder Caine and
Brother and Sister Thomas started out for Ueno station. They tried to get a
rikisha each but could not; so they determined to walk to the car line and
there take the car to Ueno, after wadeing around in the slush and storm until
after 1 o’clock pm, they reached the station but found that due to the heavy
snow, no trains were going north so Elder Seely returned here with the others
who had gone to see him off, all wetter but just as happy as before.[3]
Due to the starm I did not venture out of the house.
The morning was spent talking with
the brethern and reading for Elder Fairbourn a portion of “Macus King the
Mormon” After dinner Mr.Tane and Mr Tsukamoto called. The later had a date with
Elder Caine but as he was not at home I entertained them both until 4 o’clock
at which time Caine returned. I then had a gospel conversation with Mr. Tane
which lasted about thirty minutes.
The evening was spent here at home
visiting with the visiting brethern and having a good time in general, I also
helped Ei San with her Bible lesson
This evening when I went to bed my
lungs bothered me a little.
Retired 10:20.

Weather: Cloudy.
This morning after breakfast I led
some reading and then went to Yotsuya to get some things for Sister Nachie.
After dinner, I went to the Dentists with Elder Seely and Fairbourn. We took
the car a Aoyama, but due to the crowd that were out to see the funeral of
Arisugaw’s twenty-one year old son, Miya. we could only get part way down in
the car so had to walk about two miles. I called at the dentists but he was too
busy to mend my tooth but I made a date for two o’clock tomorrow. I then went
on to Shinkawa’s and paid for Elder Chadwick’s cloths and at the same time sold
a Brief History. I returned home at 3:20. There were some Sunday school
children here, so I talked with them a while.
Today being Elder Fairbourns
birthday and tomorrow and Sister Thomis’es it was thought best by Brother and
Sister Thomas to have an extra supper so a very fine spread was put out for up
just previous[5] to the departure of Elders Chadwick Anderson and
Seely for Elder Seely decided to stay over and go up with the Morioka Elders
and stay with them over Sunday as it would be impossible to reach Sapporo in
time to attend meeting on Sunday
The supper was delicious and
thoroughly enjoyed by all.
At 6:15 President Taylor, Ele.
Taylor and Brother and Sister Thomas left the house with the three elders that
were going north. I remained home and studied my Sunday School lesson. Elders
Stimpson and Taylor stayed here with us tonight. Elder Caine held a Bible class
and Mr. Okada stayed so late that we had prayers upstairs and at 10:45 I
retired. Mr. Okada went home about 11:30.

never saw nature more beautiful. The cherries are loaded with blossoms and
various other trees are blooming which make the entire place look like a big
flower-garden. After supper I wraped the silk to send out. At 8 o’clock Mr Tane
called and I helped him to understand his Bible lesson.

was spent studying and reading “A life of Christ for the Young” by Weed as
President Taylor requested we to read it over before taking or considering it
use for the English Bible Class.
After dinner President Taylor
thought it advisable for me to go over to the Imperial University and have the
Head of the Medical department examine my lung as they continue in their weak
condition. I went over and met Dr. Aoyama, and he gave me a thorough
examination saying that I had a slight catarrh in the throat and lungs and
subscribed some medican also said that a change of air would be good for me. I

[26]Tokyo, Thursday April 30th 1908
Weather, Beautiful.
This morning I got up at 6:45 and
after dressing went downstairs and assisted in doing away with a rat. The
experience was realy interesting, and from the noise was just as exciting. When
President Taylor went into the office this morning he discovered that a rat had
been doing mischief during the night by chewing books papers and rubbers found
about the office so we started a search for it as we knew that there was no way
for it to get out other than the floor and that had been closed during the
night. After a short hunt was discovered in one of the drawers in the writing
desk. President procured a large stick, and stationed himself directly in front
of the drawer while I got behind to scare it out. During the mean time Elder
Thomas who had been assisting up until the first sight of the rat had taken up
his quarter on the out side of the window and had become a[27]
spectator and had also attracted his wife and Elder Caine who exhibited equally
as much courage as the rest of us.
The rat made a few side skips for a
quick get away and then lunged forward directly in line for President Taylor
but instead of exicuting the stick as intending he jumped in the air, striking
his hand on a nail in the big stick inflicting a slight wound while the rat
passed by with out being molested and took refuge behind the big stack of
Church Histories and other books stored away in the corner.
There was nothing left now but to
move all of those books in order to get at its hiding place. After moving about
half of them it jumped up in my face which almost upset my nervers, and then
hid in another pile of books. After a little while we located it and President
Taylor with all the dignity of a conquer raised the war stick and let it fall
on the poor thing while the eager spectators cheered the chivalrous youth[28]
and thus ended the life of one of the Mikado’s pets.
After breakfast I helped dust the
book that we pulled down and then to clean the office. About 11:00 I went to
Yochomachi and ate dinner there. The after noon was spent tracting and talking

My health is improving and I am
feeling quite well today. I got up at 6:30 and spent fore noon at home reading.
At 12 noon we had prayer meeting.
President Taylor did not meet with us as he desired to appoint Elders Hubbard
and Harris to begin active missionary work and so went over to Yochomachi for
meeting.
After meeting Elder Caine and Thomas
and I went over to Kudan where a great celebration is being held in honor of
the soldiers who have departed from this world.
Elder Caine received from a friend
several tickets to the “ Sumotari” exhibition, so that was what attracted us
for we had heard a great deal about this kind of athletic sport but had never
seen an exhibition.
The Japanese wrestler is unlike the
ordinary Japanese as he is very large, fat and muscler, has low sensual face
and long hair, done up[35] in a cone shape on the crown of the head.
He is very strong and does many feats with his strength.
The match takes place in in a sand
ring about fifteen feet in diameter, encircled by straw, rice-bales and
protected from the sun by an umbrella-like roof supported on four posts. We
watched about twenty events. The wrestlers are naked but for a colored apron
about their loins and to see the muscles and fat that some of them cary is
surprising.
An umpire with a fan in his had
stood in the ring to deal out fair play, and whenever a foul was made both
contestants must step out of the ring and pick up a little sand or lime by the
two left had posts, and then reenter and take their places. The object of the
game was to put each other out of the ring or else throw down.)
The sepectators were accommodated in
a place resembling a temporary theatre surround the arena. There[36] were
thousands of people, mostly soldiers in so much that the yard was filled right
up and it was with great difficulty that we got in and then only because we
were foreigners. The people seemed enthusiastic over the sport and to enjoy it
very much, but I could see nothing of much interest but am glad that I have
seen one.
Kundan is the military park and has
within it wall the trophies of all the wars. I have visited this place before
and seen all that is worth seeing.
We returned home about 4 p.m. and I
read until suppertime.
This evening four young men called

I got up about 6:30 and read until
breakfast was ready. I ate breakfast and just as I was about to leave to go to
Yotsuya a friend of Elder Caines’ called and I joined to talk with him so he
could speak english very well and had been in Mexico several years and knew all
about the country. We had a very interesting talk.
Went to Yochomachi about 10:30 and
went out and showed Elder Harris where I had tracted, so that he and Elder
Hubbard would know where to start for they are entending to work from Monday.
After dinner I went out tracting and about 2:30 met an old man who did not
believe in a here [written over hear] after, and the argument we had for two

[39]Tokyo Saturday May 9,1908
Weather: Cloudy and
cool.
I got up about 6:30 and helped clean
house. The Dr. told me to come this morning at 8:30 and he would operate on my
nose, therefore I did not eat any breakfast as I though I might have to take
chloroform. After breakfast Elder Caine went with me over to his office. This
morning I made it a special desire in my prayers that if it was absolutely
necessary to have the operation prefromed that the Lord would allow it to be
done and if it was not that the Dr. would not do it.
We arrived at his office about 8:30
and sit there for about 40 minutes when I was called in. After examining my
nose again he said that the operation was unseccessary, and that I was alright.
I regarded this as an answer to my prayers so returned home rejoicing.
After eating a few bites I set to
work helping President Taylor with the cleaning and also I mended my cloths and
hat[40] As today is the appointed day for the Sunday School boys to
be entertained here Elder Stoker came over about noon and we set to work
preparing the things with which to entertain.
At 2 p.m. all was in
readiness and twenty boy ranging in ages from 5 to 16 years had arrived.
Elder Stoker, Sister Tai and I had
the entertainment in charge. Elder Stoker being spoaksman.
The children all met in the big room
and sang a song after which prayer was offered. I went to Aoyama while this was
going on and bought some ribbon and peanuts for the children.
We went out in the Japanese part
after this and played “three-deep” for a while. Then “pussy wants a corner.”
The third number was a contest in fetching rings in a squar from a line some 12
feet away. The game was as follows, a figure [appears as a much smaller box]

the boy divided in to two companies and the side that could get to nine first
consegatively was the winners. The boys[41] enjoyed it very much.
The obsticle races were next in
order and were entered into with vim
We then went out on the grassy plot
to the north and had several races and a tug of war, after which we played
steal-sticks for a while. We then came back to the house, the children washed
themselves and met in the large-room where several games such as guessing
games.
At 7 o’clock they all gathered
around the table in the dining room and enjoyed a nice lunch. When the got up
from they all had a look of contentment such as only children who have been
entirely satisfied can have. After supper they again assembled in the big room
and were dismissed by prayer, and then went to thier houses. The weather was
ideal and the entertainment a success in every way.
We did not get supper until 8:20. I
swept the room for morning and dusted. About 9:30 took a bath and at 10:20

with a friendly spirit and give a true description of thing as they are.
About 9:30 I went over to Yochomachi

[50]Tokyo, Monday May 18, 1908
Weather- Clear and
hot.
The weather is beautiful today but
just a little too warm for convenience.
I got up at 6:20 and swept the house
After breakfast I went to Yochomachi and tracted all fore noon, and had fair
success.
I ate dinner over there with the
elders and while eating Elder Stoker told me about Mr. Kuga’s visit last night.
Some five or six months ago while out tracting Elder Stoker called at his home
and had a talk with him and he begin to investigate thinking that Mormonism was
Heathenisms and he being a Baptist desired to show elder Stoker his mistake.
After investigating for some time he ask to be admited in to the church, but he
was advised to continue his investigations a little further.
About that time I visited the head
m[e]w/[man] of the Jail over in Yochomachi and my visit brought a great deal of
opposition from a Christian missionary named Taylor who is[51] doing
work amoung the officers of the Jail and as Mr. Kuga works there he was severly
critised by the head of the department where he work as well as the Missionary.
This critism casued him to disconinue his investigation but he still continued
to come around and was very friendly.
For the past few week he has been
fighting a battle with himself and when he came last might it was with a letter
to the Head of the Baptist Church with his resignation and a statement that he
woul write later his reasons.
This is very good news for his a man
of some ability and faith and if he continues faithful will be a power for good
amoung his fellow men.
After dinner I layed down for a hour
and just as I was going out a young man called and I spent the after-[next
line] noon talking gospel to him.
I returned home at 5 o’clock and
studied my Bible lesson.
We had a good class and many points
were brought out. I received a card[52] from Mr. Iheda this morning.
The Asahi Shimbun continued the
article on Salt Lake and Ogden in today’s paper and nodout much good will
result from the article for it is full of praise for the Mormons.

I got up at 6:45 and studied for a
while about 9a.m. I went to Yochomachi and tracted during the forenoon. At 12
noon I went to the house and met with the elders for prayer meeting.
I tracted until 4 p.m. and then met
with Elders Caine and Stoker at Yochomachi and a program and ma[nu]e was
prepared for the party to be given tomorrow evening at Head-[next line]
quarters for the Theoligical Department of the Sunday School. The Japanese
Bible Class and the English Bible class.

The after noon was spent preparing
for the entertainment to be held this evening for the Theological Dept. of
Sunday School and the Bible classes. A dainty lunch was prepared and by 5:30
every thing was in readiness.
About 6 p.m. they starte to come in
and a 7 sharp the elders and nine Japanese making a total of 17 sit down to a
fine supper consisting of meat and butter sand-[next line] wiches, shrimp
solid, four kinds of cake, straw-berries, candy and nuts.
Just one hour was consumed in eating
supper and all seemed to[55] to relish it very much.
After supper games of various kinds
were played until eleven oclock when a song was sung and the party closed by
prayer.
The party was a grand success and
will no doubt be the means of teaching a powerful lesson as the Japanese
entertainment are generally accompanied by sake and singing girls, but the
party to night showed that this thing were unnecessary for it was a common
opinion that a better time was never had.
The games played were as followes.

After breakfast I started on an

Ikeda from Sendai . He was coming over to see me. I returned with him and spent
the rest of the forenoon talking with him. He has come down so he says to see
if he can get released from a contract which he signed some years ago which
binds him to become a preacher of the Nihon Christian church. After dinner I
went with him to Yochomachi and had a talk with him there. His is living while
in Tokyo with his fostered mother. I spent some time talking with the Elders

This afternoon Mr. Ikeda called and
spent most of the after noon but his manner was somewhat changed and he said
when his fortired mother learned of his associations with the Mormons she was
very angry and forbid him from going to their homes anymore. She is a
Christian: but is misled as many others.
The evening was spent studing and
reading. About 9:45 took a bath and at 10:20 retired.
Today the Patrotic Womens

This morning I got up at 6:45 Sunday

After presenting the minutes Elder
Stoker, Harris, Hubbard and I went to Aoyoma and saw the graves of the victoms
of the Matsu shin disaster The grave of Marshal Aoyama’s son was most decorated.
The Matsushin was training vessel on
board of which was about 100 young men from the ranks of the nobles who were
training to become officers in the Navy. About two weeks ago while down in
Taiwan bay it was accadently sunk and about 200 persons lost their lives;
amoung them being the older son of Marshal Aoyama. We returned home at noon and
ate dinner.
About 1:30 President Taylor handed
me a letter and told me to take it to Elder Stoker. This letter proved to be a
release for Elder Stoker. I watched him close as he read it and saw the tears
come up to his eyes. I can almost imagine his feeling after an absence from
home of almost six years.
We had a fine Sacrament meeting five
of the saints were present with us and partook of the Sacarment.
After meeting we, Elder Stoker,
Harris, Hubbard, Sister Thomas and I went with Sisters Tai, Kawaki and Ei San
over to the Barrocks south of the house where a celebration was being held. The
thing was very uninteresting to me.
I spent about a hour before supper
studing as I have to discuss the subject of “A Successful Life” this evening.
Our meeting commenced at 7:30 with eight present. I spoke twenty-five minutes

studied any thing about Mormonism or if he had read the articles of faith and

We traveled to the river with out
incident. Mr Sato was met at the end of Aoyama and went with us to see the

and it would be hard to express the joy I felt in acting in this calling.
After meeting I read for a while and

[67]At the conclusion of
